Latex Dressing and Care Guide

Latex is a natural fabric that needs special care so here’s our guide for wearing, cleaning and storing your second-skin creation.

Remember, this is a general guide, and you should refer to the manufacturer’s care instructions first.

How to wear your latex

Firstly, latex is nothing without its shine. And to create that shine, you need to add polish. Vivishine is a respected and popular product and will make your latex sing.

After you’ve done this, you’re ready to get dressed! Ensure you wear no jewellery or watches; anything that could get caught and rip the delicate material. Treat latex the same as you would a pair of beautiful sheer stockings. Also, be careful of nails because they can do some serious damage!

Latex can be tricky to put on; it’s like a second skin, so you need some lubrication. You can use talcum powder or a specially designed lubricant for latex, such as the Pjur Cult Dressing Aid. You simply rub the lubricant onto the garment and carefully slip it on.

How to clean your latex

Your latex creation should be treated as if you’re hand-washing delicate lingerie.

You can use a specially designed cleaner like Vivishine to wash your garment; this will not only clean but help maintain the garment’s shine once it’s dry. If you do this, simply follow the instructions on the bottle.

You can also use a gentle washing liquid. To wash, add a couple of drops of the liquid into a clean sink, bath or bowl of lukewarm water and gently wash your garment.

Once cleaned, rinse thoroughly and hang on a wooden or plastic hanger to air dry indoors, away from sunlight. Don’t use metal hangers as these discolour the latex. Once your garment is dry on the outside, turn it inside out and let the inside dry so you get rid of any excess moisture on the inside.

When it’s completely dry, apply talcum powder to the inside of your garment, this will help ensure there’s no moisture buildup.

How to store your latex

Use a latex polish to keep your garment in mint condition. As mentioned, Vivishine makes a spray as well as wipes. You can spray the shine onto the garment and use a cloth.

Store out of sunlight in a garment bag in a cool, dry place. You can hang your latex on wooden or plastic hangers but just watch for any delicate straps because these can deteriorate with the weight.

Colours can transfer, so make sure to store your light colours away from your darker colours.

Keep away from heat of any kind: sun, candles, heaters, irons. Keep away from all metals, oils and liquids. And don’t store your latex with leather, as residual oils can affect the latex.

Be mindful of hairsprays and perfumes when you’re wearing your garment, as these can destroy latex.

As with all beautiful creations, treat your latex with love and follow these simple guidelines, and your shiny show-stopping piece should last for years.
